The pages that get cited most in ChatGPT aren’t the ones that last

Guides and lists win ChatGPT citations fast, then fade. Reference and research pages barely move. 7 weeks of data by page type.

Key takeaways

  • Guides, lists and product pages get cited fast in ChatGPT, then fade after about week 4.
  • Product and service pages drop the most: from 42% to 17% of their original citation rate by week 7.
  • Reference and research pages barely move. Refresh the fast-fading pages every few weeks.

The pages that get cited most in ChatGPT aren’t the ones that last.

At Searchable we tracked pages after ChatGPT first cited them in June, then followed them for 7 weeks to see how much they kept getting cited.

The pattern surprised me.

The fast starters fade

Guides and how-tos start strong. In week 1 they keep 46% of their original citation rate. Government and reference pages? Just 30%.

Then around week 4, everything changes.

Guides fall from 40% to 30%, then settle at 26%. Best-of lists go from 39% to 31% to 24%. Product and service pages get hit even harder. They start at 42% and finish at 17%.

The boring stuff barely moves

Government and reference pages go from 30% to 32%. Research and statistics go from 35% to 31%.

By week 7, those are the only two categories still above 30%.

Heatmap of how often ChatGPT keeps citing each page type over 7 weeks. Government and reference pages hold at 30 to 32 percent. Guides fall from 46 to 26 percent, product pages from 42 to 17 percent, news from 32 to 15 percent.

How much of its original ChatGPT citation rate the average page of each type keeps, by week after it was first cited. Source: Searchable.

How to read it: each number is how much of its original citation rate the average page of that type keeps that week. It’s adjusted for ChatGPT’s total citations each day. The data is from Searchable, where I work: ChatGPT answers to questions brands track with us, asked daily, for pages first cited 1 to 13 June 2026.

What I’d do about it

A guide can win you visibility quickly, but that lead has a short shelf life. Same with lists, product pages and especially news.

If those pages matter to your AI search strategy, refreshing them every few weeks probably matters more than you think.

Original research and reference-style content plays a different game. It sticks.

Getting cited once is easy to celebrate. Staying useful enough for ChatGPT to keep coming back is the harder part.
